Today was Lucille’s (tom chi’s wife) birthday and we gave her a Protei Sweatshirt. Tom yesterday had made a nice card for her with a drawing of her face.

We formed a quick Huddle about “what are your goals in port of Ho Chi Minh”?

DAY 27
SHANGHAI
And we got off the ship and had about an hour to walk around Shanghai

Finally we arrived at Innovation Works:
Once we got settled we got some food at a Sichuan restaurant: Totally greasy.
Then the event started: . We each gave our 3 minute pitch:

We met David Li from the Shanghai Hackerspace. I wish I would have been able to visit Xin Che Jian but we felt compelled to fly immediately to Shenzhen, as there was the New Year’s celebration starting pretty soon, which would prevent us from meeting with seeed Studios and other companies due to their closing early.
Then eventually we left, and head over to the afterparty. Shanghai is super bright: and some stray cats I met up with Timmy and Lexie
Then Cesar and I head to the airport. We decided that we should take off the “safecast” names from our geiger counter, in case I got searched while in transport, and instead we should put on the name of a university. So that’s what we did.
DAY 28
In the airplane, the radioactivity levels were pretty high:
It was interesting to me to see a map with America all tiny on the right side, and Asia-centric visually.
Then we got to the airport and asked for directions to the part of Shenzhen where there are electronics.
And we got directions to a hotel:

We went to the hotel then we head over to the Chaihuo hacker space and met Hao and his girlfriend.

SEEED STUDIOS
First thing we head to SEEED Studios
We met Leslie, Hao, and Violet. And had a big tour of the place. Here are all the parts:

And they are trying to make arduino more accessible to artists so made this funky arduino:
and they’re developing some more robot-like stuff:
What we realized is that they can help us with the manufacturing and distribution of electronics (PCB’s, motor controllers, motors, sensors, communication), but the more mechanical parts of the robotics we will have to source elsewhere (mast – carbon fiber, hull – polycarbonate). Seeed Studios is one of my favorite open source hardware distributors and manufacturers. It is an honor to work with them.
We also see that if they are selling the car robot for about 160 USD, the electronics are quite similar to that of the boat’s (two dc motors with encoders). So, we have therefore lowered the price of Protei’s estimated retail value.
We went out to a really awesome Cantonese traditional restaurant for lunch.

We head to try to get to the water of Shenzhen, on the sea side. At first we got lost and instead found a crazy hotel
THE BEACH
When we finally found the way to the beach, we grabbed some funny fruits.

and we ate some beautiful and delicious fruit
And some DISGUSTING fruit although I’m not sure what it was. It was definitely pungent.
As we left, it was evident that the entire city was decked out for New Year’s.
The city of Shenzhen is brightly lit and I love it.
Back at the hotel, we did work and went for a funny midnight snack:
DAY 30
HAXLR8R
The next morning we went to HAXLR8R to visit Cyril. It is a really cool hardware incubator program. They are helping companies develop their product in order to reach the market, manufacture, and distribute (and succeed). The super cool thing about them is how hands on they seem to be, with feedback directly related to the product design and production choices.
SEG and the ELECTRONICS MARKET
Then we went to the electronics market but unfortunately by then there were many shops that were closed for the new year’s.

That day we spent some time in the electronics market, we bought a PC for Protei to use. We bought it in a 3 story giant shop that has probably 3000 computers for sale, every vendor competing for the customer. Bargaining is hugely useful. Anyway, then we head to Hong Kong, for a late dinner with Dawa Ma and Maquin & the family. It was an amazing house and really cool to be there. Then we all got makeovers.

HONG KONG mingling event & workshop
In the morning we took the train from Maquin’s into the downtown Hong Kong near the Harbor where our boat was parked, to the Hong Kong Marco Polo Hotel. We had a few minutes to grab some breakfast… at McDonald’s. I had heard that McD’s in China was a cool experience but is was mostly fancy and western and sort of gross.
We had a 30 second pitch each, then spent about an hour mingling with local folks at the private room in the 6th floor restaurant in the Marco Polo Hotel, then we walked back to the ship for a on-ship workshop with Tom Chi on rapid prototyping. There were mostly students from Hong Kong high schools attending. Amruth had the genius idea that we should all “switch” teams that we present. In other words, instead of presenting our own projects, we each pitched another company. Protei pitched Damascus Fortune. Solar Ear pitched Protei.

Then Tom Chi got going: . Eventually, we ended up breaking into groups of students and going through a rapid prototyping session.
What we came up with was a giant amusement park composed of a GIANT robot on the water of which people control individual segments to propel it forwards.
AFTERPARTY
Finally we went out to dinner, led by Catlin and Scott from One Earth Designs. For the new years, Hong Kong was all lit up. We finally got to the building, and I was astonished at high UP the traffic of people spreads. In New York, things are spread horizontal. But here, they are spread vertically. People ride the elevators in each building to every floor, and the crowds continue. In New York, I’m used to office cubicles being stacked on top of the masses. Here it’s masses atop masses. Riding up the elevators, we finally arrived.
Afterwards, we head to the 47th (?) floor of a building to drink some drinks and overlook hong kong.

We awoke early in the morning for a Press Call in Tom Jelke’s office. It was Daniel, George, Protei, Gurugi, Tom from SAP, Bernard from Microsoft XBox and a few others facilitating it in the room, speaking to a bunch of press on the other side.
LADIES MARKET
We head out in the morning to go to the Ladies Market which is a massive street of stalls and shops, selling many fake designer items and electronics.
In the subway station on the way were funny scultpures: And when we got off, we got some giant citrus. After trying to eat it I realized it must be for cooking.
The fish markets are crazy – tons of fish that are writhing as they die. But the amazing thing is that the markets are full of live fish and shellfish. SO fresh. For breakfast, We got some super super greasy food
But since you can’t legally eat on the streets, and most people really don’t, we snuck up 8 stories to the roof of a building. We struggled to get our giant citrus opened:
We finally got to Ladies’ Market but it was too early for the stalls to open. So we decided to kill an hour by getting funny massages with cups.
After the funny massage, we got some Bubble Tea and Mango Juice. Finally the stalls opened:
I bought a cheap but larger backpack at the “ladies market” where there are tons of fake stuff (clothing and other). Look at this “authentic” tag. the bag isn’t leather…
It’s such a bright city: I love that about hong Kong.
SOW ASIA
We visited SOW Asia which was really awesome. It is exciting that we would be able to pursue a partnership or a collaboration with them especially if we were interested in establishing Protei in southeast Asia. There were many good things that we have concluded about Hong Kong / Shenzhen area regarding potential to manufacture and work.
FERRY
Then we took the ferry back to the ship …
…but before we got on, we had a few spare moments so we visited the museum of art. There was a warhol show going on but we saw instead we saw an exhibit on the animals in china.
It seems they are obsessed with Snakes … super relevant – for Protei being a sea snake, and bringing in the year of the sea snake!!
DEPARTURE & NEW YEARS

Tonight is the Chinese New Year’s eve. As we head out at 20:00, the lights from the city light up and there is a laser light show lighting up the entire city. Each building has a fully lit facade and many buildings have lasers blasting from the roofs. It reminded me of Ars Electronica when the entire city turned into a laser light show. Except way cooler. And less tacky. The city lights of Hong Kong are amazing.
And there are many buildings with totally lit up facades that are like big screens of tons of LED’s. It’s pretty awesome.

So – instead of deciding to take a motor bike from Shanghai down to Hong Kong, we realized that we need to get there ASAP – reason is:
it is the Chinese new Years starting on the 9th. Therefore, companies are starting to take vacation on the 7th. We REALLY want to meet Seeed studios and other companies that can give us leads and insight into manufacturing and sourcing electronics in China.

KYOTO INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
After driving all night, we arrived in Kyoto. I drove the last 80 KM and also in the city It was a bit jarring driving on the left side of the road for the first time

We met with three professors. One works with hydrodynamics trying to optimize surfaces. He collaborated with a google manufacturer to optimize the surface. And the tank for particle imaging.

1. my own personal experience : personally, it was somewhat tiring. No, actually I expected it to be more tiring than that. just brainstorming: meeting with Alvarro was amazing, presenting at flying tokyo was really amazing because to me i like to be in settings with other designers and hackers who have done crazy technical stuff that have actually been contextualized ito really amazing outcomes that help people and do cool stuff that is super conceptually interesting using new technologies and appropriating old ones. So being with Zach Liebermann and alvarro and all the other super hard working guys doing super cool media arts is awesome; I’m also SUPER excited to have some new tech work to be doing – we got some F-Palette boards from FURO (doing amammamazing stuff that is both technically and visually amazing). Also: it was cool to eat lots of tiny japanese treats from lots of petrol station. For me also I am super excited to have done some stuff with SafeCast that might be useful – but moreover being able to successfully use the geiger counters in spaces that haven’t yet been tested is pretty cool. I guess the one thing I missed was like super crazy culture because all we were seeing was nerdy tech dudes. which is ok but I have to go back. I like tokyo – fast paced, efficient, clean, up all night. I liked making gyozas with Cesar’s cousin’s. hands on work with alvarro and with safe cast was awesome.
2. Company / 3. Program:
-company – i sort of already said: let’s think program – I think catlin brought up a great point that maybe it would be super cool if companies got together and had an opportunity to like, get together and hang out. I think that would allow people to get to know each other. The thing is organized events are sometimes annoying so I think it would have to be casual, but also for a point that would encourage us to go to for the reasons that we are here (i.e. a business event or something where other folks would be at that will be good for us / our companies). I think that the event was good but I actually felt that it wasn’t a spot where VC’s were hanging out and waiting for us to pitch so they could invest. Unless I missed that. Instead I thought it was more conceptual and therefore some more direct feedback on our talks and presentation I would have liked.
-I think that it was good to have one hour prior to talking to just grab food and walk around for 1 hour. i think?
-I think for us it was good to define the people that we’d like to meet in each city – media arts , included. And open source people doing applications; and academia / robotics; And people addressing some of the issues
–reflections together – only see expats: is that ok?
-language barriers – posters perhaps to help

Worked out with 3 other girls, thought the water was gone on the ship but it ended up being ok for some reason. I wonder what happens that there is no water/brown water for a while, then things are fine.
Today we had a small workshop just to discuss the port event, then we worked on our 6-min pitch. It was super rocky today.

BIOS BIOS BIOS
Gabriella Levine is an interactive artist and open-source hardware designer interested in the relationship between technology and ecology. She studied Biology and Piano at Cornell University and Oberlin College, then worked doing Cancer Research at Albert Einstein College of Medicine before abandoning the lab for the outdoors to become a wildland fire fighter based in Oregon. She holds a Masters degree in Design and Technology from ITP, Tisch School of the Arts, NYU. She creates sculptural and robotic works that mimic environmental phenomena and animal behavior. She is the COO of Protei Inc, manufacturing robotic flexible-hull sailboats, and President of Open-H2O, a global community and New York based non-profit, developing ocean preservation innovations.
Since 2010, Levine has exhibited work internationally including Ars Electronica, MIT Media Lab, and the American Museum of Natural History. Former startups include WEEELS, developing a cell phone application for taxi sharing and transport solutions, and Star_lab, the Social Transit Research Lab. She received the 2012 Prix Ars Electronica Hybrid Arts Award, Artist in Residence at Instructables, the NYU Task Force Green Grant, the Gulfstream Navigator Savannah Ocean Exchange Grant, and was named Woman of the Hour top 24 women in Tech in 2011 by Limor Fried,Adafruit Industries. She teaches at various New Media institutions, and has presented globally at Symposia and Lectures including the Open Hardware Summit 2011 (NYC) and Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design. Her work has been written up in Wired, CNN, Vice Magazine, NY1, and Scientific American.
Currently, she is part of a radical experiment, travelling around the world as a fellow of the Unreasonable At Sea program, representing Protei in over 14 different ports worldwide.

Well , it did actually seem ok later.

We stayed up all night working on the slides;

Then… we took a short nap, and unfortunately I slept through a really exciting meeting with the biology professors on board. It seemed like there was a really cool conversation that happened between them and Cesar about transforming the MV Explorer into a “Ship of Opportunity” : so adding a wet lab, being able to take samples and do sensing from the waters, developing a type of trolling net that can be pulled behind hi speed cruises, measuring mercury in the waters by measuring it in fish or other live samples; Or also doing some NOAA inspired tests, that involve mostly observations;
Then… super cool – we got into the 2nd floor workspace and started working!!

Then I did that thing that was : “women in business day” ie had dinner with the ladies. Was funny.

We will be stopping in honolulu at 12:00 just to refuel the boat, but Cesar and I have been trying desperately to make SURE that our prototypes get onto the ship.
Debrief tomorrow about Hawaii: but tonight is a big night. The Union will be filled with 400 people: this is your chance to tell the entire ship what you do and why you do it. Slides automatically change in real time. 6 mins and 40 secs, 20 slides, 20 secs each

Unreasonable at Sea day 12
Right now we are stuck at port in Honolulu, it will have been more than 24 hours, but unfortunately we are not allowed off the boat, because we were just supposed to stop here to refuel and pick up mail from the post master at the port. But we are not leaving because of rough seas ahead… hehe. I wish we did leave ! Because I like swells.
You can tell that the waves will be big because the librarians have strapped down the books to the bookshelves:
-I guess people were even informed to REALLY stock up on sea sickness meds… lets see how I feel later on! Because I do not like taking preventative medecine. Anyway, we took off at around lunch time; It was neat taking off – there were tons of whales bopping around the water – well, what I see is spurts of water and small body parts popping up out of the water. Sort of neat.

George, on Reflections:
So, I’m not sure the best way to go about writing a reflection. The first things that come to mind are all the things I actually, like, NEED to take care of: bookkeeping, email Iliya, finish writing for blue trail, write up the course description, do some cinder, take care of all my own receipts and invoices, ugh. But what about the way things have gone during the time I was focused on the NOW, and what I was actually doing?
The good things that stand out: When I do things that are super involved, it is good. Driving a jeep off road was perfect. so glad I did so. I love off road driving now
Seeing a beach mottled in rainbow plastic – wow. That is a crazy thing to see, sand that is not rock but plastic debris from fishing trash. I thought it sort of, like, got lost at sea. But I guess a lot of it doesn’t get lost at sea, it washes ashore. The really cool thing too was that the beach was so teeming with wildlife – I took some photos of rocks under water and I found that, amazingly, there were amazing colorful fish IN my photos, little did I expect!
To me it feels like we are doing the best to make our time useful, to meet people who might put autonomous sailing robots to use, and to try to find insight about what type of instrumentation might be good for Proteis. But we are not trying to market to mass consumers, nor to big industry, just trying more to do grounds work and talk to locals. It is an interesting experience to see what the outcomes of the goals are even though I don’t know yet.
The design workshops are quite interesting to me, I need to find a balance between taking initiative and stepping back because sometimes I feel I stay too far in the sidelines. I cannot tell. But I think the thing I like most about what we are doing are the design thinking workshops and the hands on running around (i.e. driving 4 wheel drive off road to the beaches and stuff). The design thinking workshops I hope will impact me in all sectors of life, but I find I especially need help with: making a story; giving that HOOK that George talks about; making a story that sticks. Now I don’t feel like I can do it alone or write compelling stories or wording. I have sort of taken in a lot and vomited it back up, but how can i do it alone for new stories or different stories? How can I continue to practice this at all times? in various aspects and projects I’m to work on? Or on a day to day basis?
To try: try to do this on a daily basis with small stories and goals for little code related projects (arduino, c++);
How would I want to spend my time differently in Japan?
maybe a clearer goal would be good but at the same time i am finding value in just “seeing” what happens, with a few goals in mind; Perhaps it will be good to think about if there are connections I should make that are a bit OUTSIDE the box, outside of what I’m thinking. I am contacting friends from places that aren’t necessarily directly related to Protei. Japan will be a lot of being guided by Cesar because he knows it well; but what about places more foreign to me? Vietnam? Burma? How will this work where the schedule is a bit looser and less directed?

Reflections of UnreasonableAtSea day 0-11
What is a reflection, firstly?
Ok I’m going to go with definition 2, a serious thought or consideration, an expressed idea about something; Well, quite broad, but I guess I shall dive in and express my ideas about Unreasonable at Sea, day 0 through 11:
One thing that I am trying to get used to is patience – the learning will come. It is interesting to hear from the description of this project and the captain of this ship, the MV Explorer, say: you will be a changed person in 100 days. How nebulous a statement?! So just like, cruising around the world with some others on board will really make me a changed person?
And, in the UAS description, it said things like “you will be constantly working hard” and “you will be aggressively working”…
I am an impatient person and I like doing intense hands on problem solving work. So, my initial week was a hard adjustment. Because the work here is cerebral and slow. Slow, reflecting, feeding back, talking, problem solving, iterating; But not about rapidly prototyping and moving moving moving ahead. So what I am anticipating is a long intense journey laying ahead, that it will take weeks to begin to integrate.
What I am seeing is that I will be able to integrate this into all aspects of life. In unexpected ways. Here is one example: I am writing a course description, called Exploring Biomimetic Interfaces. This is meant to be a survey and a hands on workshop using nature-inspired designs. BUT: what I have spent a week learning from George is that the problem with one’s solutions very often is solving the wrong problem. For example, a ladder company is trying to solve a problem of allowing people to reach things too high for them to reach. But perhaps the solution is NOT to use a ladder. There are many other solutions: ask for help, wait until you grow 10 inches, get a stool, get an arm extension… Is a ladder really the best way? Out of context, it seems most practical, but perhaps not. So my question to myself was, How can I be teaching a solution (biomimetic designs), if what George seems to be presenting is how not to jump to solutions but always iterate and ideate through the problem solving and prototyping process in a cyclical way: learn about the problem, profoundly, using empathy, in order to really hone in on a possible solution.
Talking to George specifically about this was enlightening – the biggest takeaway is to iterate through that cycle of questioning the prototype : is it really the best solution? So, using nature as an inspiration for a design can still be the solution, but perhaps in order to more understand nature’s wisdom, this is what needs to be treated with empathy.
So, my goal is to try to comprehend and integrate design thinking into my life, across every aspect of my life: Protei, administration, decision making, social, honing in on goals, design prototying. But this is not going to happen from 1 class; and this is not going to happen in a week. This might happen through immersion in this experience, through relaxation and reflection, and through multiple iterations of challenges, on which I am forced to focus (i.e. pitching in front of large audiences).

The most challenging moments I have faced thus far have included the preceding times leading up to the two pitches we have done so far. The anticipation of getting up in front of a lot of people and pitching forces me to focus, hone in, write and tell a story, and learn the story. My goals are to: learn to tell a better story; learn that “platform tilt”, i.e. how to create the hook to really lure in people. I also hope to learn some practical skills about the things I don’t know and don’t want to focus on: strategy, business legal / admin, communications: these are things that are exciting but I hope that they come naturally so I can focus more on the technical work.
But, the Protei Prototypte that cesar built while in Van Couver has finally arrived, we got it onto the boat safely! What a success, because it was in a HUGE box and had some items that are not allowed on board (flammable resin, etc). So, that is so exciting, and I finally last night did some technical work here finishing a small electronics unit that we can put into the prototype as we get it ready to sail in the port of Yokohama.

My best memories so far are actually exploring in Hawaii. Getting and driving off road. It was the most exciting. I seem to thrive on adrenaline rushes, and do not get this often enough. Public speaking is nice, and the two times Cesar and I have presented Protei have gone quite well. I would like to become an even better public speaker and also, be able to learn to improvise more (rather than repreat the same thing over and over again when I am flustered.
But: my number one moment so far:
Driving out of Kamilo Beach road, after an awesome day, of only getting stuck in the sand once so far (see below), I was feeling a bit overconfident about speeding trough the volcanic dunes at full speed ahead. “I’ve been driving off on a pretty intense rocky road for 2 hours, now I’m pro!”. But, then I drove really off the off-road, it felt like I just climbed up a pile of rocks and sat crooked on a pile of volcanic mounds. I just missed the “road” because nothing really looked like “road”, so it seemed like I actually might be able just to roll backwards, off the pile of rocks that the Jeep Liberty was perched atop, That was when I thought, “OH no, we’re gonna miss the boat. we’re gonna be stuck here.” It was just a split second of fear, just a taste, but I noticed, as Matt got out of the car to try to find a rock to give the tires traction, my right leg on the gas (though not depressed), was shaking as it does when I am rock climbing. It is called Elvis leg in rock climbing terms, and as I do when climbing, I dropped my heel and decided that we’d be out of there in no time.
And that was probably the highlight moment of the trip so far. Regarding the “fun real world” time.
And, about an hour earlier: this is the first time we got stuck in the sand. It only happened because I tried to avoid running over a “rainbow gatherer” who was pretty much lounging spread out in the middle of the road. Granted the road was my interpretation of a more drive-able strip of sand in a massive sandy / rocky beach side. No real road to be seen. Anyway,
Also, the things we found along the way were way exciting:

Here’s where we went:

The plastic beach, “Trash Beach”, Kamilo point beach, on the south eastern coast of the big island of Hawaii, was amazingly beautiful. It was mottled with plastic trash, polluting the seaside with a mixture of PET and Polyurethane, intermingling with the volcanic rock and sand. The entire beach was mottled with rainbow “sand”. What a beautiful creation of human trash.
And what is unclear to me is the impact. Does this kill sea turtles, albatross, fish, humans? Of course, I have seen the horror photos online like this one (cited here: http://gizmodo.com/5384892/where-plastic-goes-when-it-dies-birds-stomachs)
But there is still so much I don’t understand. The beach was teeming with life, healthy-seeming starfish and fish and snails. . I couldn’t believe it.
And a sea slug !!
For Protei, I am trying to do some what a similar learning endeavor: Come at it with a clean slate: part of a goal is to learn: Is it possible for a business with an IP model such as ours to actually survive self sustainable? And if so, how? Are our goals achievable of simultaneously: proliferating our technology through community involvements and contribution, in addition to creating an online hub of knowledge, as well as getting a viable product to the market?
And besides being around some of the most keen marketers, business professionals, idea – generators, men/women-of-action, I will have to see how much design thinking can really take Protei for a long ride.

There are some places along the journey where we cannot pick up new water – we can make our own water but it is super pricy and takes a ton of energy;
200 tons of water per day used on the boat; 234 liters / person / day is about what we are consuming; but the UN says that 50-100 liters are necessary for people; we are using so much more than needed here on this ship;
Daniel’s SAS ship ran out of water and he had no shower or toothbrush… hehe.

Then we went to Hank’s office, and we got the privilege of meeting Marcus Eriksen from the 5 gyres (5gyres.org) who was in town.
They place these marker blocks in the water at one prat of the island, and then later pick them up at the beaches, using hundreds of numbered blocks as tracking devices. Wouldn’t it be better to have super cheap honing devices on each ones, or waypoint tracking with GPS? I felt that this could be made fairly cheaply but honing devices especially waterproof ones are quite expensive.
Hank also showed us ALL this sand he collected, fullllll of plastic trash particles.
And he has collected a nice collection of toys:
We made our way back to the ship in the rain (although in a cab), then we went out to eat at Cafe Pesto which I totally hated (extremely expensive and not yummy) but maybe I’m just snobby, then went to “The Tavern” and danced a bit
A bit weird but fun:
Then we went to walmart until closing at 1AM to pick up some electronics and needed gear.
We stopped in this town, although I cannot remember the name of it, before pulling off the paved road to try to find “trash beach” (aka kamilo point beach)
After leaving the paved road, the crew mounted a go pro on the car with a strong magnet:

It turned out there was a hippy festival (a rainbow gathering) happening on the beach at that time.
so lots of camp sites and stuff.
Finally we saw the REAL trash beach and saw rainbow mounds of debris mottling the sandy, rocky beach.
And pulled out into the sand.
There was a hippy lying in the middle of the sand, so I tried to go down around him and realized… we were sinking. And that was the first time getting stuck. So Matt got out and got a coconut and tried to put it under the tire so that we could gain some traction.
But it didnt work. Eventually it took the help of 10 rainbow gatherers to push the car out of the sand.

And then we went to a hobby shop to get a remote control, because ours arrived at shira’s house from France a little too late and now are en route to Yokahoma.

Last night we took some water samples of the Pacific, by dropping a towel down off the side of the boat, attached to a nylon cord. We pulled up the cord and squeezed out the towel into a white container and from there into a glass vial. We also saturated a green Opflex sample. We were on deck five and it fel like about 30 m of line was needed to reach water level. It was a bit funny dropping down the towel along the side of the boat which did get caught a bit in some of the lower level windows. I imagine looking out my window and being weirded out by a floating towel.

What are models out there? Is Arduino and Seeed Studio and other companies generating revenue? Did they all take on investment?
And: a non profit will need $ to maintain IRS tax exemption, $ from varied sources of funding to show that they are also putting the funds into efforts that help others; As that is what a non profit is for.

During the 2010 BP oil spill, the coastlines were destroyed and people living near the coast were devasted. But the real tragedy was that they were helpless to aid in the relief because people didn’t know what to do and were restricted from entering the problem area. Current methods for cleaning the oil spill used repurposed fishing vessels dragging oil absorbant booms. They only collected 3% of materials, they were hazardous to the fishermen’s health, and they were very expensive to operate.
CESAR: technology
We are developing a new technology of a flexible hull sailing robot, called Protei. Protei is cheap to develop, uses renewable energy, fast to build, unmanned, and can be operated during a storm.
GABY: community
And, we are making its designs available to the public online so that global communities can take a hands on approach towards oil spill relief to solve marine disasters.

open source hardware means publish designs for other to use, modify, and distribute, ask that they credit us and share back with the community

Our boats have neither a centerboard nor a rudder. Instead, the whole boat changes shape to pull scientific and clean up equipment. Tepco is funded by the government and in close ally with the nuclear power industry in Japan. They say it is safe. But there are no boats traveling along the shore. Residents want a way, ON THEIR OWN, to take a hands on approach to learning about the contaminating radioactivity in their homeland. Protei would allow local residents to take a hands on approach to measuring radioactivity along the coast lines. Protei would make it not only easy to deploy data collecting boats embedded with geiger counters, but also fun and a learning experience. Residents would feel more of a sense of independence to take control over their own safety, rather than looking to industry to feed them answers.

Unreasonable At Sea Day 3
I sit in the student Union and the ship has departed 3.5 hours ago from Ensenada, heading to Hawaii. http://unreasonableatsea.com/?page_id=93
It is DEFINITELY rocking, there is someone near me who has already taken ill, and there is a sliding door in the auditorium that is creaking as the ship rocks. Seasickness… hasn’t hit me, luckily . what a mystery.
But travelling in the winter, through the pacific, leads to perhaps a rocky ride.
My day in numbered format:
1. breakfast at 6:30
2. a bit of work and a few calls, including some admin / logistics for Protei INC back in NYC, while Cesar collected another water & opflex sample
3. We met Julia from Amorphica and walked to get coffee at a cafe. We talked a bit about Protei and Amorphica working together in the future. Would Amorphica be interested in being a part of the process of manufacturing Protei? Would Mexico be a perfect sopt to manufacture Protei? Would Amorphica be more interested in some of the Oh2O research?
4. We met Aimee, a friend of Lina, who we met last night, who kindly drove us to the Biological Oceanography Department of the Oceanology Division at CICESE to meet with Helmut Maske, researching Plankton Ecophysiology. We had a long chat with him and his PhD students, Mary Carmen, working specifically with surface temperature stratification and its implications on the transport of surface algal blooms (or red tides). The goal of the meeting was to see what type of water samples we could effectively take while at sea and while at ports, what we might be able to test for (including plastic trash, biological particles & metals, and how we might filter for these particles. Some more notes & photos are below.
5. We Head back to the area of the ship, via taxi, with Julia. We stopped to grab food at an awesome food card called Sabina Bandera, according to Anthony Bourdain, an unimposing looking cart in a corner. It was the 2nd delicious Ceviche I’ve had in Ensenada. It was super delicious.
–>on the way back, we stopped to take some water samples by the bay.
6. We board the ship, a roommate moved into my room, sadly as it sounds, but it shall be good to be a sardine like all the others.
–>One cool thing is that we get 25 hour days due to gaining one hour each day

Notes from the lab:
>>Plastic trash & toxicity can be tested, but using specific instrumentation. A good place to get samples from is from the cooling intake of the ship. Testing Chlorophyll closer to the coasts especially near Hawaii and Japan will be interesting. Chlorophyll Fluorescence sensor, a dissolved organic fluorescence sensor, and a phycobilic protein fluorescent sensor could be interesting. Check out : WET LABS and SEA Bird for sensor companies, both based in oregon. 3 channel sensors, about 8,000 dollars, 12V power intake, possible have serial signal output. We can also buy a sensor for CTD: temp, salinity, depth. We can also look for CDOM (color dissolved organic matter), looking at different organics with different properties. Oxygen however isn’t interesting to measure, but salinity and temperature are. So Temp, CDOM, and Chlorophyll as we move towards Japan and Hawaii coasts would be of interest. Then we got into talking about radioactivity dispersion, and he mentioned the interesting point that there is much history of bombs being used to study the circulation of oceanic matter.
Then, about plastic trash: filters for plastic will pass the garbage patch, and he said that as we can visually see the garbage as we sail, we could ask some of the sea men on board to grab some water samples for us in a milk jug. We can also use a fishing net with fine mesh because most of the trash is tiny, about 1mm. We went outside to see some of his equipment that he has developed for water sampling, and he mentioned a few times Bigelow Labs, and Barney Balch who samples from halifax to portland, ME.
Seeing dissolved organics: use fluorometer, but it will be hard to see in low concentrations. We cannot see bacteria but bigger phytoplankton with a 400x microscope. To get higher concentration, use a centrifuge then filtration. But how can we get this equipment on board in a practical way? Well, we can get a manual filtration pump and inline 47 or 25 mm filter holders. We could then fix the samples in counting chambers using lugol, and use fluorescence to search for chlorophyll.

–$500-3000 dollars / day for a research vessel, in the US up to 10K/day for 15 passengers.
–He will write a proposal within the year on researching the oxyminimum zone between baja and Chile; Protei vessels can be both useful for studies off the coast of la paz, bahia navidad, as well as much help with mary carmen’s research on surface transit of red algae. None of the samples thermistors or gps data currently are real time or unmanned. She goes out there and measures manually with instrumentation that is left there.

Unreasonable At Sea Day 2
Today we had a ~4 hour orientation:
–>Some of the things we discussed:
We all must make decisions based on values, and treat everyone as if they are or might be the Messiah.
–>About 30 of us, all the Unreasonable Institute people did a big “get to know each other” game. We informed in 60 seconds, over and over, to new folks, what were each of our “super powers” and “kryptonites”
–>We seemed to come out of the excersize feeling that we each “connected” on our vulnerabilities
And I liked that Daniel used the term “misfit creative” about some of us
-to be bold, he asked someone to stand on the table and give a 30 second pitch. we all gave feedback and it happened 3 more times until it was pretty spotless.
Takeaway: WRite down some of my strengths as well as some of my weaknesses, to connect some of what I love with what I love to do.

Everyone talks of this as a radical experiment, never before been tried. And a big risk. So that seems promising.
–>Daniel also said that this experiment will become the highlander institute of the 21st century, meaning that we will transcend borders, to have a global impact.
–>social action is entrepreneurial thinking, technology, creating a market based on solutions
–>Solutions cant be land locked
It is exciting how much we will be introduced to the D. school and their ways of learning. I presume that will entail the schedule that they’ve deemed effective, the learning style, and other initiatives.
–>Some other opportunities will be interacting with the young kids, as well as interacting a lot with the students.
–>In the evening Cesar and I went to meet some of his friends here, three out of four who were ocean biologists. They gave us the names of some of the folks who are working at the University and we will go talk to them today about sampling plastic and water for metal detection.
–>We took a walk to some of the shipping areas and took a sample of water and dropped the opflex in the water.
